Pieces of a LAMP Server
LAMP is an acronym used to describe the combination of open source software used for web hosting of websites. LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP. The term, LAMP server, was first coined by Michael Kunze in 1998 while writing an article for German magazine. Since then, the word LAMP has gotten immensely popular not only in Germany but also in various other English speaking countries. The applications are:
(L) Linux – the operating system running the server. The fact it provides the best security has made i one of the most popular and highly preferred operating systems especially for web hosting and a major component of the LAMP server. Unlike Windows where the customer has to pay hefty fees on getting a registered license key, Linux is a free open source OS. Linux programmers have the ability to modify the OS as they see fit. In structure it resembles Unix, but not really Unix since the latter is not a free OS.
(A) Apache – is an open source web server and another essential module of the LAMP server. Just like Linux, it is free having various advantages. Today it is, by far, the most popular web server used for websites and has played a major role in evolution of the world wide web as we see it today.
(M) MySQL – also known as “My sequel” is a free open source database management software. It uses SQL (Structured Query Language). It is an important part of the LAMP server used for reliable web hosting. For websites handling large amounts of data in terms of customer names, addresses, phone numbers, billing information etc., MySQL is the preferred choice of any website designer/developer or even the website owner. The main reason for its popularity is credited with its ease of usage in managing the information.
(P) PHP/Perl – these are two programming/scripting languages that are used in web development. It is up to the web developer, which programming language to be used for developing websites. PHP is an acronym for hypertext preprocessor and is used in creating dynamic webpages.
Perhaps the best advantage of using LAMP server based technology for web hosting is that all programs are open source and free. There are several resources resources more information about technology trends today. When new updates are available, developers and companies can use these updates and enjoy the latest technologies for hosting websites with maximum security, protection and ease. Using LAMP server for running an online business ensures peace of mind as the best combination has been put to practice. The amalgamation of the all of these technologies is termed as LAMP server that has been very common for online businesses.
